Small pleasures, real change

Why planning small, enjoyable activities helps when energy runs low.

When our mood drops, we give up the things that used to bring us joy. That is understandable – but the fewer pleasant moments, the harder it is to find energy. In cognitive behavioural therapy we reverse this circle.

Instead of waiting for motivation to appear, we plan small activities: a short walk, coffee with a friend, a favourite ice cream. Mood often follows action, not the other way round.

Try this week

  • write down three small things you enjoy
  • plan one of them for a specific day and time
  • afterwards, notice how you feel
